Remove the hidden details in a PDF

PDFs carry the author’s name, the software that made them, dates and more. See exactly what this file says about itself, remove it, and check the result.

How this runs

Nothing loads until you add a file. Then the engine starts in a Web Worker in this tab.

Where PDF metadata hides

There are two places: the document information dictionary (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, creation and modification dates) and the XMP packet, an XML block that often repeats the same details and can hold editing history. Images and pages can carry their own XMP too.

This tool removes all of them and shows the result read back from the new file. It does not change the visible page content: names typed on the page itself need redaction.

Steps

  1. Add the PDF.
  2. Read what metadata it carries.
  3. Remove it.
  4. Compare before and after, then download.

Limits, stated plainly

  • Text visible on the pages is not metadata; use Redact for that.
  • Metadata inside embedded attachments is not touched; check attachments with the inspector.
Already have Preview or Edge? Preview shows some metadata (Tools → Show Inspector) but does not remove XMP.
