Reading the results

Read-only fields cannot be typed in by design. On official forms many are meant to be: barcode fields, fields copied automatically from another field (like an ID number repeated on every page), and signature boxes that must be signed in ink.

XFA means the form has a second, XML-based layer. Adobe Acrobat and Reader show that layer; most other viewers ignore it and show the AcroForm fields. Pure XFA forms (no AcroForm fields at all) show “Please wait…” in non-Adobe viewers.

Encrypted forms with an empty password open normally but restrict editing; the inspector reads them anyway.

Steps

  1. Drop the form.
  2. Read the summary: AcroForm, XFA, encryption.
  3. Filter the field list (read-only, required, empty).
  4. Fix: fill it, or use the form’s official page.

Limits, stated plainly

  • Field scripts (calculations, validation) are listed as present, not run.
