Form W-7 applies for, or renews, an IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN): a tax-processing number for people who need a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible for a social security number, such as some nonresident aliens, their spouses and dependents. An ITIN is for federal tax purposes only. Most applications and all renewals must include a U.S. federal tax return unless an exception in the instructions applies, along with original identity and foreign-status documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. You can mail the application to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, or apply in person through an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or a Certifying Acceptance Agent so originals need not be mailed. The current revision is December 2024.

Originals or certified copies.
Photocopies are not enough. A certified copy is one the issuing agency certifies with its official stamped seal. Mailed originals come back to the address on your W-7; if you need them within 60 days, the instructions suggest applying in person.
“You must submit original documents, or certified copies of these documents from the issuing agency, that support the information provided on Form W-7.”
