Form 4868 asks for an automatic six-month extension of time to file your individual income tax return (Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040-NR or 1040-SS). It extends the time to file, not the time to pay: interest runs on any tax not paid by the original due date, and a late-payment penalty can apply. The edition on irs.gov today is Form 4868 (2025), for 2025 returns; its instructions say to file it by the return's due date, April 15, 2026 for most people, which extends filing to October 15, 2026. You can also get the extension by paying electronically and marking the payment as an extension, or by e-filing the form through tax software; then you do not mail a paper form.

Interest still runs.
The extension is for the paperwork. Pay what you estimate you owe by the original due date to limit interest and penalties.
