Fix · a common PDF problem

PDF pages sideways or upside down?

Short answer. Each PDF page stores a rotation value. Fix it by rotating the affected pages and saving the file, not only the view, so every viewer and portal shows them upright.

What is going on

Every page in a PDF has a rotation value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees that tells viewers how to turn it for display. Scanners and phone apps sometimes save a page with the image sideways and rotation 0, or with a rotation that only makes sense on the device that made it. The page check above lists each page’s size and saved rotation.

Rotating in a viewer usually changes only your view. The next person, or the upload portal, sees the original orientation. Rotating here writes the new value into each page, without re-rendering or re-compressing anything, so the file stays the same size and text stays selectable.

If a scan is slightly crooked rather than sideways, rotation won’t help; that needs straightening, which the scanner tool does for new captures.
