Form 843 claims a refund or asks the IRS to abate (cancel) certain taxes, penalties, additions to tax, interest and fees. Common uses are asking for a penalty to be removed for reasonable cause or because of erroneous written IRS advice, interest caused by IRS error or delay, and an employee's refund of excess social security or Medicare tax withheld. It is not for everything: you cannot use it to get a refund of income tax, to abate income, estate or gift tax, or to amend a return; those have their own forms. The form was redesigned in the December 2024 revision. If the request answers an IRS notice, it generally goes to the address on that notice.
