Form 8822-B notifies the IRS of a new business mailing address, a new business location, or a new responsible party for an entity with an EIN. Any entity with an EIN must report a change in its responsible party within 60 days, whether or not it is in a trade or business. Lines 1 to 3 say which records change (business returns, employee plan returns, business location); lines 4 to 7 give the EIN, the old and new mailing addresses and the new location; lines 8 and 9 name the new responsible party and their SSN, ITIN or EIN. Home address changes use Form 8822. The IRS says processing generally takes 4 to 6 weeks; the current revision is December 2019.

Responsible party

60 days to report a change.

For an entity with an EIN, reporting a new responsible party is mandatory. Form SS-4's instructions explain who can be a responsible party and which number to give.

“Any entity with an EIN is required to report a change in its “responsible party” on lines 8 and 9 within 60 days of the change.”

Signing

An officer, owner or partner signs.

Why it matters

Missed notices still cost.

Without your current address the IRS may not reach you, and penalties and interest keep accruing on any deficiency even if you never receive the notice.

“Despite the failure to receive such notices, penalties and interest will continue to accrue on any tax deficiencies.”
