Form 8822 tells the IRS that your home mailing address changed, so notices and refunds reach you. It covers individual income tax returns and, separately, gift, estate and generation-skipping transfer tax returns. Each child who files their own return needs a separate form. If you also changed your name, line 5 records prior names, and the instructions remind you to update the Social Security Administration too. A business address or responsible-party change goes on Form 8822-B instead. The IRS says processing generally takes 4 to 6 weeks. The current revision is February 2021.

Form 8822 (Rev. 2-2021), Purpose of Form
Signing

Both spouses after a joint return.

The taxpayer signs; if the last return was joint, the spouse signs too unless you checked line 1 because you are setting up a separate residence. A representative attaches a power of attorney (Form 2848).

“If your last return was a joint return, your spouse must also sign (unless you have indicated by checking the box on line 1 that you are establishing a separate residence).”

Form 8822 (Rev. 2-2021), Signature
Business too?

Two forms for two addresses.

Form 8822 is for your home mailing address only. Use Form 8822-B for a business mailing address, business location or responsible party.

“Changing both home and business addresses? Use Form 8822-B to change your business address.”
